Spacecraft Design Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

From one man work pods working around orbitals to kilometer long armoured warships displacing a megaton, the space ships of known space are as varied as the crews that operate them.

Expanding on the basic starship design rules from the Cepheus Engine System Reference Document, the Spacecraft Design Guide provides the tools for a naval architect to design small craft, traders, light naval vessels or massive capital ships. They can install the latest technology to allow the ship to jump interstellar distances, use inertialess drives that bend gravity to the will of the ship, move by falling towards microscopic black holes or “ride fire“ on a ship that uses a fusion plasma drive and spin gravity to provide for crew comfort. They can also design low technology missile armed warships or capital ships bristling with high energy weapons and capital ship killing torpedoes.

New advanced rules allow for naval capital ship combat where massed barrages rather than the fire from a single turret hit decide who the victor will be.

This a companion to the Cepheus Engine RPG, it does not necessarily require that book to use. Any similiar 2d6 based system will work with this.

Question: I'm working on my conversion of Star Frontiers to the MongTrav 2E and/or Cepheus Engine. Will this book help me work out the wonky ship design from Knight Hawks (i.e. no gravitic tech, ion drives with 1G accel but no planetary landing, chemical drives (limited fuel), and "atomic drives" which do 1 to 5 Gs, burn a disk of radioactive material for interstellar flight, and apparently leave no radiation. (I'm guessing these suckers are Gas-Core Nuclear Thermal Exhaust drives? Will this book help? The MongTrav High Guard design rules come close, but not quite.

Hello fine MTP people! It seems the POD file was made as the PDF download. It lacks bookmarks (only three). Can you update the PDF download as the real PDF? :-) Thanks! In related news, your POD file looks really snazzy.

In the Starship Design Rules (and the Cepheus Core Rules), I can't seem to locate any specific information about Communications systems (range, power, what technology, etc). Am I missing something, or did the designers opt to just not address comms in detail?

Pretty much I am afraid.

You know thinking on it, perhaps a companion book is required to add new stuff and fill in the blanks>?

Dear Ian,

Greetings ! As soon as I saw your message that the POD "has slipped space dock" I ordered it ! Also your Anderson + Felix Naval Architecture / Components Guides. But in my excitement I stupidly clicked the order for POD only, not POD + PDF ! Please help ! It's under my Order #15080676 . Thanks !

I'm waiting on the POD version of this, but in the mean time: I see an entry for Gardens in the contents. The other Cepheus-based ship design system I've got with a Gardens entry is the Gypsy Knights Games Anderson & Felix one, which specifies one crew member per 4dT if you want hydroponics, which "supplement or even entirely replace" normal food supplies, but there's no mention of how much each dTon of space-weed it would take to support a person. Don't suppose this has an answer? Since you're buying by the dTon, one person per seems like it might be an answer, but that ruleset doesn't actually state anything.

It's one of those topics that comes up a lot in ship design systems and gets ignored, being terribly awkward to those of us who want to design semi-practical farming fleets for whatever reason.

Hi Matthew. Thanks for the question. This is one that has many answers depending on many sources and distilling all those answers down will take me a little bit of time. Some guidelines for this will be included in an update in the near future.

Reading this got me curious, as I also have the A&F book. I dusted off my google-fu and came across the following website article which seemed to be a pretty good rough guide for guestimating the space needed to feed a crew exclusively off of ship-grown food. In reality it varies rather highly depending on what vegetables are grown, but since we're not talking reality I'm going to use the referenced article to create a rough baseline of per person per month. Now comes the part where I try to rough out how much that will save a captain on life support costs 8O

I have that site linked earlier as part of my research database :)

Just to note that I wrote GKG's Clement Sector Setting's Anderson and Felix Guide to Naval Architecture as well.

At this point I am considering a savings total of 200Cr of monthly life support (per stateroom) per tonne of garden dedicated to foodstuffs. This would be a mixture of hydroponics and soil so vertical planting can be used to improve yield. That savings allows for food supply and some environmental benefits.

I will have a better answer in an update soon.

Did you go with the 200 Cr/mo/dT, farmer/4dT option you mentioned?

And thanks for taking the time, looking forward to getting my hands on this.

Finally put my order in for POD, and it's 200 - 100 for general life support on all gardens, and an extra 100 for farms.

Thanks again for updating it and answering my questions!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
