You want to play Traveller online using Roll20, but you don’t know how to create a new game. In this Roll20 tutorial video, I will show you how to create a new game, choose the correct character sheet, and invite players to join.
How To Start A New Game On Roll20
Go to www.roll20.net
If you haven't already done so, create a Free Account.
Once your account is activated, click Play Now
Enter your login information and click Sign In
You will be taken to the Home Screen
On the Home screen, you will find a list of any recent games you’ve played in.
You can also create a new game or join an existing game.
You can manage your subscription, access your Roll20 mail, access roll20’s newsfeed, and access Roll20’s other common features such as:
- Your Games list
- The Marketplace; where you can purchase new maps, tokens, and modules, and even give Marketplace items as gifts to your favorite Gms or players.
- Various tools for managing your Roll20 games, such as the Audio Manager and the Token Marker Library.
- A Community area where you can find forums, a wiki, and help files.
Create A New Roll20 Game
Let’s create a new game.
Click the CREATE NEW GAME button
You are taken to the Start New Game screen.
From here you can name and tag your new game, select a character sheet, and load any preexisting modules you have in your library.
You also have the option of purchasing a module directly from the Marketplace.
For our example, let’s name our game “My Traveller Game”
In the tags field, enter some descriptive tags that will help you find the new game later.
Choose a character sheet. There are many to choose from.
All major game systems are covered, and many independent publishers are represented here too.
The character sheets are usually programmed by volunteers, so there may not be a sheet for the system you are using if you are too far from the mainstream.
For our example, scroll down to the Mongoose section and choose 2nd edition by Fabian D
Click I’m Ready, Create Game
A new blank game will be created and you will be sent to the Game Details page for your new game.
We will cover the Game Details Page in another video.
Inviting Players Into Your Roll20 Game
Let’s invite our friends.
Click the Launch Game button.
On the right-hand side at the top, you will find the link to your new game - it’s obscured until you hover your mouse.
Clicking this link will launch a new player client, so what you want to do is copy the link and send it to your players. You can do that by sharing the link with them by email, Discord, or text message.
That’s it! You have created your first game.
In future videos in this series, we will go over all the important screens and controls. When we are done, you will be ready to start your Traveller adventures on Roll20.
Until next time…. Happy travelling!
