Discover the ethical considerations that come with AI-generated art, and how I navigate them to create socially responsible and diverse artwork as the creator of my Traveller RPG fan site AI-generated art.
My Interest in AI Art
As a digital artist, I have a deep passion for creating visually stunning artwork that captures the imagination and inspires others.
With the advancements in artificial intelligence, I have discovered a powerful tool that allows me to push the boundaries of creativity and produce artwork that is both beautiful and innovative.
I use AI to illustrate my blog articles, creating eye-catching visuals that enhance the written content and draw readers in. In addition, I create portraits of players' characters and NPCs for Traveller RPG adventures, bringing the game to life with striking visuals that help players better connect with their characters and the world around them.
Through the use of AI in my artwork, I am able to explore new ideas and techniques, pushing the limits of what is possible and creating artwork that is both unique and inspiring. Whether I am creating futuristic sci-fi landscapes or realistic character portraits, AI allows me to bring my creative vision to life in new and exciting ways.
My passion for AI-generated art extends to my work as the creator of Traveller RPG fan site art, where I hope to inspire players and GMs alike to envision and embark on thrilling adventures.
Ethical Concerns of AI Art
As the field of artificial intelligence continues to advance, so too does the use of AI in creative pursuits like art. While the potential for AI-generated art is exciting, there are also important ethical considerations that must be taken into account.
As someone who creates AI-generated art for my Traveller RPG fan site, I have made it a priority to address these ethical concerns and to promote diversity and inclusion in my artwork. In this post, I'll share my journey toward creating ethical and socially responsible AI art.
Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Sci-Fi
One important ethical consideration when creating AI-generated art is the potential for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and biases. This can include stereotypes based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and other factors.
As a creator of sci-fi artwork, I believe that it's important to promote diversity and inclusivity in the genre. From the multi-cultural crew of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek to the diverse range of characters and non-human species in the Star Wars franchise, sci-fi has a long history of celebrating diversity and challenging stereotypes.
By featuring a diverse group of people in my AI-generated artwork, I am continuing this tradition, and helping to inspire future generations of sci-fi creators. This not only helps to avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes and biases but also makes my artwork more interesting and engaging for a wider audience.
Addressing Potential Biases in AI Algorithms
In addition to promoting diversity and inclusivity in my artwork, I'm also mindful of the potential for biases in the data used to train my AI algorithms. If the data used to train my algorithms is biased towards certain groups or perspectives, this can result in biased output in my artwork.
To address this concern, I carefully vet and curate the data used to train my AI algorithms. This can involve using multiple sources of data to ensure a balanced perspective, as well as carefully evaluating the data for any potential biases.
Ownership and Copyright
Another important ethical consideration when creating AI-generated art is ownership and copyright. Who owns the copyright to the artwork - the person who created the algorithm, the person who owns the data used to train the algorithm or the person who initiated the process?
In my view, the person who initiated the process and put in the work to create the art is the rightful owner of the artwork. While the AI algorithm and the data used to train it play a significant role in the creation of the artwork, ultimately it is the human artist who brings their creativity and expertise to the process.
To ensure that my artwork is original and not based on any existing copyrighted materials, I never use specific names or images of real people or existing sci-fi franchises in my prompts. I never use artist names in my prompts to ensure originality.
When it comes to copyrighted data that might be in the training data, I use public models so I can't really control that. But, the influence of any specific artist or copyrighted work is so infinitesimal that I would challenge anybody to identify the source material.
It's also worth noting that creating AI-generated art is not as simple as pressing a button and waiting for the art to appear. In fact, it often takes as long as a trained artist would take to generate the same image. For instance, it took me 4-6 hours of going back and forth with my client and generating hundreds of images (most of which were unusable) and constantly refining and fine-tuning the prompt until the image matched what the client had in their imagination.
AI Art Is Here To Stay
As a sci-fi artist, I believe in promoting diversity and inclusivity in my work and drawing inspiration from the rich history of sci-fi as a genre that has always challenged stereotypes and promoted new perspectives.
With this approach, I believe that AI-generated art can be a powerful tool for inspiring creativity and fostering social progress while upholding important ethical values.
By sharing my journey toward creating ethical AI art, I hope to inspire others to create original, creative, and compelling artwork that reflects their values and their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in all areas of creative expression.
