What Is Traveller RPG?

Traveller RPG is a science-fiction tabletop roleplaying game about people with careers, histories, skills, debts, contacts, enemies, starships, and reasons to take dangerous jobs among the stars.

Unlike many fantasy RPGs, Traveller does not begin with classes and levels. Characters are shaped by lifepath character creation, where careers, education, events, mishaps, benefits, contacts, injuries, debts, and personal history can all matter before the first session begins.

Mongoose Traveller is one of the modern versions of Traveller, and it is the version most of these CyborgPrime guides are written to support.

Traveller RPG Beginner Guide

The best way to learn Traveller is to treat it as a game about people with pasts, not just characters with numbers.

Traveller characters often begin play after years of education, service, employment, danger, mistakes, promotions, failures, debts, and relationships. That history matters. It gives the Referee material to use and gives players reasons to care about the jobs, factions, worlds, and choices they encounter.

As a beginner, focus on these ideas first:

  • Characters have histories. Traveller character creation creates a lifepath before play begins.
  • Skills matter more than classes. Traveller characters are defined by training, experience, gear, and choices.
  • Starships create structure. Travel, debt, fuel, cargo, passengers, repairs, and distance all shape play.
  • Jobs create adventure. Patron missions, cargo runs, rescue work, investigations, and faction pressure drive sessions.
  • Consequences matter. Traveller often rewards careful planning, smart risks, and creative problem-solving.

What Makes Traveller Different?

Traveller feels different from many tabletop RPGs because it is not mainly about climbing levels, collecting fantasy treasure, or following a single heroic path.

Traveller campaigns often focus on practical science-fiction problems: keeping a ship flying, making payments, finding work, surviving dangerous worlds, dealing with patrons, avoiding legal trouble, handling rivals, and deciding which jobs are worth the risk.

That makes Traveller especially good for groups that enjoy:

  • Science-fiction adventure
  • Starship crews
  • Trade and cargo
  • Exploration
  • Military and mercenary missions
  • Investigation and espionage
  • Worldbuilding and subsectors
  • Player-driven campaigns
  • Consequences from past choices

Traveller can support many campaign styles. Your group might play free traders, scouts, marines, diplomats, scientists, criminals, nobles, troubleshooters, or a mixed crew trying to survive one job at a time.

Start with the basics before trying to learn every rule, career, ship system, trade detail, and combat option.

1. Understand the Campaign Premise

Before character creation, ask what the campaign is about. A merchant campaign, scout campaign, mercenary campaign, espionage campaign, and frontier survival campaign can all use Traveller, but they create different expectations.

Good beginner questions include:

  • Are we playing ship owners, passengers, crew, military personnel, or wanderers?
  • Will the campaign focus on trade, exploration, combat, investigation, politics, or survival?
  • Do we begin with a ship?
  • Do we owe money?
  • Are characters expected to know each other before play?

2. Learn Character Creation

Traveller character creation is one of the game’s signature features. You roll characteristics, choose background skills, enter careers, resolve terms, gain skills, experience events and mishaps, and decide when your character is ready to begin play.

Use the Traveller Character Creation Guide as your main starting point.

3. Learn Skills and Task Checks

Traveller uses skills and 2D6 task checks to resolve uncertain actions. Your character’s background and career history help explain which problems they are good at solving.

The Traveller RPG Skills in 60 Seconds index is useful when you want quick explanations of what skills mean in play.

4. Learn Starships, Travel, and Trade

Many Traveller campaigns revolve around movement between worlds. Starships, jump travel, fuel, cargo, passengers, ship mortgages, repairs, and timing can all become part of the adventure.

If your campaign involves a ship, start with the Traveller RPG Ship Travel Time Calculator and other ship tools.

5. Turn Rules Into Sessions

Traveller comes alive when rules become situations: a patron job, a damaged ship, a missing passenger, a disputed cargo, a faction offer, a scout mission, a suspicious noble, a trade opportunity, or a problem the crew cannot ignore.

If you are preparing to run the game, start with Traveller RPG Session Zero: What to Explain Before Play Begins.

Character Creation and Careers

Traveller character creation is a lifepath process. Your character’s career history helps explain who they are before the campaign begins.

New players often expect character creation to work like a class-based fantasy RPG. Traveller is different. You may start with a concept, but the lifepath can change it. You might plan to become a Marine and end up as a Scholar, Merchant, Scout, Agent, Drifter, or retired Naval officer.

That is not a failure. It is part of the game’s charm.

Use these guides when learning character creation:

Skills, Combat, Starships, Trade, and Exploration

After character creation, Traveller opens into play through skills, situations, resources, and consequences.

The crew might negotiate with a patron, repair a damaged ship, hide illegal cargo, investigate a missing passenger, survive a dangerous world, fight a boarding action, broker a trade deal, or choose which faction to anger.

Use these topic areas when you are ready to go beyond character creation:
